15-20% Of Septic Systems In Muskoka Need Work
Rural septic systems in Muskoka have come a long way in recent decades but there's still a lot of work that needs to be done.
That was the message from Sandy Bos, the Township of Muskoka Lakes Building Inspector when he attended council to discuss Muskoka Lakes’ septic system re-inspection program.
Bos said In 1981, 21 per cent of the systems inspected were discharging directly into the lake. Although the situation is now greatly improved, inspectors are still finding some 15 to 20 percent have substandard systems.
Since 2000, 7,600 properties have been inspected. Of those, 200 had leaking tanks, 500 required repairs and 1,000 were not maintained.
