Bracebridge Looks At Changing The Rules to Help Affordable Housing Become A Reality
Bracebridge Councilor Mark Quemby wants more action on affordable housing and he’s looking to change the rules on subdivision developments to help get it done.
During Tuesday morning’s Bracebridge general committee meeting, Quemby suggested the Town consider changing the rules when it comes to subdivision planning. He said if new subdivisions are requested to set aside space for mixed use housing it would help address the area’s affordable housing problem and alleviate headaches for new homeowners in the subdivisions. If people know before they buy that affordable housing units are allowed in the subdivision then it could preempt any future squabbles over their construction.
District councilors cautioned that the province is currently working on some major policy projects regarding affordable housing and the Town would be wise to wait until the provincial report is finished before getting too involved in making any changes themselves.
