Candlelight Vigil today at 4pm remembering murdered women and girls in 2022

The Muskoka YWCA is inviting the community to attend a candlelight vigil tonight until 6pm at the Huntsville Public Library to honour and remember the women and girls who died by femicide this year in Ontario.

A candle will be lit for each women and girl who was murdered during 2022 in Ontario and each name will be read to help remember and honour them.

The YWCA says the vigil is part of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women — a day of remembrance that began in honour of the 14 women killed on Dec. 6, 1989, at École Polytechnique, also known as the Montreal massacre.

A year after a hand signal was created, the Canadian Women's Foundation found few are ready to help abuse victims.

The Canadian Women's Foundation created Signal for Help to help people trapped in violent homes during the coronavirus lockdown silently report abuse over video calls.

The gesture is covering your thumb with your fingers.

“We've seen at least six cases of the signal for help being used in situations of violence against women,” said foundation Vice President of Public Engagement Andrea Gunraj.
Only one in six Canadians are very confident that they would know what to say or do, so the foundation created a course to teach people.
