District asks for re-opening of grass runway
During the District of Muskoka council meeting on April 19, council approved a motion to re-open the Muskoka airport’s grass runway if an exemption is granted by Transport Canada.
Due to safety standard issues and the cost of fixing, the grass runway closed in June 2020.
However, there are areas where the runway is still usable, according to Muskoka Airport Chair Bud Purves. He also notes that should the motion to re-open be approved, airport staff would receive guidance on which areas were safe for use.
Airport staff applied for the exemption on March 30 and won’t hear back until June 2021. A new grass runway is being planned, however it will not be completed until 2022.
