District Council Approves Re-Development of Fairview Island
The re-development of Fairview Island took another step forward on Tuesday evening.
District council approved an Official Plan amendment, which allows for the construction of an institutional camp on the island in Lake of Bays.
Fairview Island was originally developed as a summer camp in the early 1940s, councilors heard as part of a staff report. Infrastructure on the island included a two-storey boathouse with docking facilities, a main lodge and dining hall, seven cabins, six docks and 16 additional accessory structures. The camp ceased operation in the 1960s and the island has been used as a family compound since then.
The new camp is expected to consist of a central lodge building, five housekeeping cottages, one accessory dwelling, a service building, and two boathouses. It is proposed to demolish all of the existing structures, except for the two-storey boathouse which will be renovated.
