A project to increase the number of available childcare spaces in Muskoka is taking longer than expected.

In June 2017 the Province announced, details of the 2017-18 Early Years Capital Program to support access to a range of high-quality, inclusive and affordable early years and childcare programs.

In 2018, the Trillium Lakelands District School Board was successful in securing funding for two locations in Muskoka: Gravenhurst Public School with 73 new spaces, and Glen Orchard, with an additional 24 spaces. The Simcoe Muskoka Catholic School Board also received approval for an expansion of 39 spaces at St. Mary’s in Huntsville.

During their most recent community and planning services committee meeting, District councillors had a lengthy discussion regarding the delay on the Gravenhurst Public School project. Staff said that approvals were received however the TLDSB was not ready to proceed with the project.

Committee expressed concerns with the lack of progress by the TLDSB on the project and requested that staff pursue discussions with the school board.
