Gravenhurst Moves To Save Fire College
A motion by Gravenhurst Deputy Mayor Heidi Lorenz to save the Ontario Fire College in Gravenhurst was carried during the town’s Feb. 9 council meeting.
The motion, seconded by Councillor Graeme Murray, states that the fire college offers cost effective and top-tier training, that the closure is detrimental to firefighter training and that this will result in significant job losses that affect the broader community.
The Ontario Fire College also was on the receiving end of support from the Green Party of Ontario this week. They sent out press release urging the province to keep the college open.
Councillor Murray suggested they should have a plan in place for the property in the event the Province continues to pursue the closure. The Muskoka Rd N. property has been in use since 1902 and became the Ontario Fire College in 1957.
The Ontario Fire College is scheduled to close permanently on March 31st.
