Health Unit Warns of Blue Green Algae
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is advising residents and visitors that a blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) bloom may be present in Three Mile Lake in Muskoka Lakes Twp.
The Health Unit says the bloom has not been confirmed by testing however water samples will be collected and test results communicated as soon as they are available. As a precaution, pending test results, the health unit advises that human or animal consumption of this lake water should be avoided.
Boiling the water will not destroy toxins and home treatment devices may not be effective for their removal. Until further notice, residents are advised not use the water for drinking or for food.
Safe water sources include municipal water, bottled water or a good well that is not affected by lake water. The health unit and the MOECC will continue to monitor and test the algal bloom will advise when the water is safe for use.
