Huntsville Council hears about Passive Houses and longer term affordability

During Monday’s Huntsville Town Council meeting, Councillor Jonathan Wiebe presented a report on passive house standards. Wiebe told council that a passive house is a voluntary standard for energy efficiency in a building, and reduces the buildings ecological footprint.

Passive house principles include solar orientation, high insulation, high performance windows, an airtight enclosure, and balanced ventilation with heat recovery. Wiebe says these steps can reduce heating and cooling costs by 90%, and your home would be draft free, quiet and have improved air quality. It would also appraise higher.

Council heard that the upfront costs would be 10-20% higher and sourcing high performance materials could be challenging, but that situation is improving.

Councillor Wiebe says he hopes to get more conversations going on this type of build, and that more builders and landlords will be able to lower costs to renters by having more affordable long term costs.
