Mackenzie, Adams Withdraw From Race For District Chair
Premier Doug Ford announced at a press conference on Friday, that he intends to introduce provincial legislation that would amend both the Municipal Act and the Municipal Elections Act to reverse changes, introduced in 2016, that mandate the election of regional chairs in York, Peel, Niagara, and Muskoka Regions.
The legislation would result in The District Municipality of Muskoka returning to the system that was in place prior to 2016; the appointment of the District Chair by the newly elected members of Muskoka District Council at its Inaugural meeting that is scheduled for Monday December 10th.
The move affects three candidates who planned to run in the first municipally elected campaign for District Chair, including current chair, John Klinck, past chair Gord Adams and former Huntsville Mayor Hugh Mackenzie.
After the announcement by the Premier, both Adams and Mackenzie indicated that they are withdrawing from the race.
