The moustaches will be growing and, in some cases, flowing throughout the globe this month as Movember has officially begun. And there are plenty of teams signed up for the cause throughout Muskoka.

The fundraising event began in 2003 to raise funds for men’s health initiatives has funded over 1,250 projects globally over the past 13 years. The challenge is to start growing a moustache on November 1 and not to shave until December 1 (or later if you please), raising funds and awareness for the issues at hand.

This year and in subsequent years, the Movember organizers are taking aim at mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

According to facts from the Movember website, the rates of unchecked prostate cancer will double over the next 15 years. While around the world, testicular cancer is the most common form of the disease for men aged 15-39. As well, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day worldwide, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides. Another interesting statistic is that on average men will die six years earlier than women.

Closer to home, suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadian men aged 15–44, while 4,000 men in Canada die annually from prostate cancer.

The Movember goal is to reduce the number of men dying prematurely due to these health issues by 25 percent by the year 2030.

Since 2003, more than six million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters across 20 countries have joined our global men’s health movement, helping men across the world live happier, healthier, longer lives.

While most women don’t grow actual moustaches, they come up with creative ways to join in the fun; be it a faux-stache or even drawing one on each day, while pledging to get in on the fundraising act.
