Muskoka Lakes Ponders Subdivision On Sensitive Wet Lands
A debate over the future of Mary Jane Lake is headed for Muskoka Lakes Township this Month.
Council will discuss plans for a 10 lot waterfront subdivision on Mary Jane Lake that was put on hold pending further study.
The plan came forward during a recent Muskoka Lakes planning committee meeting and was opposed by several people and cottage groups.
Those concerned said there needs to be more research done on the potential ramifications of adding the new lots. The primary concern was the effect the development would have on a small, undeveloped lake that is surrounded by environmentally sensitive wetlands.
Proponents for the development argued that all further environmental protection can be done at the site planning stage. They said there was no need for any further studies.
Nonetheless, councillors still had concerns about the development’s impact on the lake. They voted to proceed with a Blanding turtles study but voted against conducting a boating impact assessment.
A final decision will be made once the studies are completed.
