Muskoka Lakes Twp. converts Lock Street into a pedestrian zone
The Township of Muskoka Lakes announced a pilot project for Lock Street in Port Carling that will see the street converted to a pedestrian only space this summer. The municipality says the initiative is one of the key public realm projects identified in the new Community Improvement Plan.
Beginning July 1, 2022 through September 6, 2022, Lock Street in Port Carling will be closed to vehicular traffic. During this time, Lock Street will be a safe pedestrian space to connect with friends and family alike. The new pedestrian area will feature picnic tables and life-sized board games.
Mayor Phil Harding says “We consistently heard from the community during the development of the Community Improvement Plan, the need for more pedestrian safe spaces and connections in the downtowns.”
On July 1, 2022, Canada Day, the community is invited to the Lock Street Kick Off Event happening from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The event will include a Free Mayor’s BBQ, live music, life-sized board games and of course an official ribbon cutting.
