No Charges Laid Against OPP Officer After Shooting a Man in Gravenhurst with an Anti Riot Weapon
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has found that an OPP officer that shot an armed Gravenhurst man with an anti riot weapon in March, was in the right and no charges will be laid against him.
Shortly after midnight on March 24th, 2022, an OPP officer shot an armed man in Gravenhurst with an Anti-Riot Weapon. The man then fell into medical distress due to a suspected drug overdose. Officers administered Narcan to the man and he was arrested and was released from the hospital the next day.
The SIU was involved because the police officer discharged an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield, which is classified as a firearm.
Director Martino found the use of the weapon was legally justified to aid in the man’s arrest. In the result, there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer conducted himself other than lawfully in his dealings with the man and the file has been closed.
