SIU clears OPP in Bracebridge man's injuries
The SIU has cleared officers involved in an incident with a Bracebridge area man.
The report says that on November 2, 2022, someone called the police to ask them to check on the welfare of a 20-year-old man because they were worried he might hurt himself.
Two members from the Bracebridge OPP detachment visited the man in his Bracebridge motel room and had a conversation with him. He was originally open to the notion of going to the hospital with the officers for a mental health evaluation, but he then turned rebellious.
The report says the individual spat at the officers after being handcuffed and searched. The man was brought to the ground and detained for assaulting a peace officer. The individual was taken to the detachment and placed in a cell after being arrested.
The man was transported to the hospital after complaining of leg pain, when it was discovered that his right knee had cracked.
SIU Director Joseph Martino evaluated the available information and came to the conclusion that there was no evidence to support either officer's guilt in the man's arrest and injuries. Criminal charges in this instance were not warranted, and the file has been closed.
