Taboo Resort Seeks to add an additional 128 rooms

90 letters were received by the Town of Gravenhurst regarding the proposed expansion of the Taboo Resort. Although according to public attendees at the June 28, 2022, Planning and Development meeting, many residents within 20 meters of the resort didn’t receive the notice regarding the application, and the ones at the meeting weren’t happy.

The resort is proposing to expand to an additional 128 hotel rooms, in addition to the existing 55, for a total of 183.

Attendees of the meeting expressed concern about the increased traffic the hotel expansion will bring to Muskoka Beach Road, as the resort is already currently using parking across the road as an off-site option to accommodate visitors and staff.

Attendee, David Nicholson indicated that the nearby school co-ordinated an effort for the existing road safety, providing residents with signs saying, “Please slow down. Drive as if your children lived here.”

Resident, Anne Stanway, expressed that parking has always been an issue, even when the resort was Muskoka Sands, and said, “If it couldn’t be accommodated at that time, with this new hotel…how can it accommodate it?” She worried that the road to the additional parking space has a curve to it which impacts visibility, and it has no sidewalks.

Other concerns included impact of water safety with increased boat and other motor vehicles making it unsafe for residents to swim from their docks. Apparently, the facility is also being referred to as “the light house” because of the glassed-in lobby and brightness of the current facility impacting the quality
