The District of Muskoka will continue advocate for the funding needed for Hospice Muskoka.

Muskoka has a strong need for palliative care, with seniors over the age of 65 beating the provincial average by 8.5%.

Hospice Muskoka has provided care to South-West Muskoka since 1995, and opened Andy’s House in 2020 to provide palliative care in a home-like environment.

The District of Muskoka has agreed to issue a letter to the Premier of Ontario and the Ministry of Health, to continue to advocate for funding for Hospice Muskoka.

The Hospice was previously denied funding for their plan to add five palliative care rooms and one pediatric care room, to the existing three.

The District’s Health and Services Chair, Steven Clement said, “I’m passionate about this and would like Health Services to promote this to the Minister.”

The letter and resolution for the matter will also be sent to the municipalities in Muskoka, the local Member of Parliament, and the Chiefs of Wahta Mohawks and Moose Deer Point first nations for additional support.

A request for a delegate to attend the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in August 2022 has also been made to further advocate for the additional funding needed by the Hospice facility. Clement has offered to represent the District on this matter.
