Town Of Bracebridge Calls For Health Emergency
The Town of Bracebridge is petitioning upper-level governments to declare a public health emergency over the ongoing opioid crisis.
During the latest Bracebridge general committee meeting, Mayor Graydon Smith said the scourge of opioids is wreaking havoc across Muskoka and throughout the country.
There were more than 3,000 opioid deaths in Canada between January and September of last year.
Smith said there is a significant opioid problem in Muskoka and he said it's time to take the message beyond anecdotal and begin taking action.
Along with petitioning the government to declare a health emergency, Smith said he would also like to see funding put into the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, more money for treatment and rehabilitation and greater cooperation between upper levels of government and municipalities to help combat the problem.
“I don't want to see any more deaths in our community,” said Smith.
