YMCA To Close 3 Fitness Centres in Central Ontario
The YMCA announced yesterday that they will be closing 3 fitness centres they operate in Central Ontario. The locations include Barrie, Orillia, and Parry Sound. The YMCA says they hope to eventually re-open the Gravenhurst and other locations.
“As an organization with limited reserves, we can’t compromise our long-term ability to serve the community by continuing to operate facilities that are not financially viable. As a result, our Board of Directors has approved the very difficult decision to close our fitness facilities in Barrie, Orillia and Parry Sound," the statement says.
In the future, the Parry Sound Y will continue to operate as a licensed child care centre. Day camps in Barrie, Orillia and Parry Sound as well as licensed child care at the Barrie Y will continue to operate through to the end of the summer; in the coming days, YMCA staff will contact families impacted by the closure of the Barrie Y to find alternative spaces at other YMCA Child Care Centres. The YMCA is also making every effort to relocate staff to other locations and/or to support them in finding new employment opportunities.
Financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic are being blamed for the closures.
