A new parking by-law proposed for Gravenhurst

Monday, 23 June 2025 08:35

The new parking by-law will replace 3 older by-laws

Gravenhurst staff proposed an updated parking by-law to Council, in the June 17, 2025, meeting.

In a report by the Town’s Director of Development Services, Melissa Halford, last year the Town received a letter about parking options for First and Harvie Streets that were previously reserved for Ontario Northland bus.

The bus company no longer uses the spots, so it was requested that they be converted to general parking.

Staff were requested to investigate the options, in addition to consider another request about extending the parking hours at the Gravenhurst Seniors Centre.

The report adds that upon review staff concluded that because they have four separate by-laws “it became evident that there is a need to consolidate these regulations into one parking control by-law for the entire community.”

It continues that staff determined that the current 3-hour blanket parking limit “seems to lack a clear purpose and would best be used in a designated Downtown Core area only.” Therefore, staff propose allowing a 12-hour maximum for on-street parking for roads and highways outside of the Town’s defined core area.

Halford clarified that these are the only changes proposed. She said, “Whatever is currently in the by-law is what was carried over.”

Staff believe this extended parking time will address concerns of business owners who need it for their customers, as well as for the Senior Centre, visitors, and residents needing the extra time.

Mayor, Heidi Lorenz, expressed, “Safety is the biggest concern. We’re not looking to go around and cause problems for ourselves and give tickets out, unless there’s a concern.” For example, somebody parking in a fire zone or in a way that impedes traffic.

The proposed by-law will be posted on the Town’s website for public awareness and feedback over the next couple of weeks.

Halford also encouraged Council to reach out to the people that have contacted them regarding parking issues to inform them about the proposed changes “and see if it addresses their concerns.”

She added that staff will report back in July with the public feedback and recommend a final by-law for Council’s consideration.
