The installation has been changed and moved to a new location
Huntsville Council approved a new location and installation type for the Town’s Unity Circle project, in the April 28, 2025, meeting.
Council originally approved a ground level design for the project last February, which included a pie-shaped circle with four sections representing community members, including the 2SLGBTQI+, Indigenous culture, veterans, and community diversity and accessibility.
The installation was to take place on the pedestrian walkway at Dara Howell Way, however, due to concerns about the longevity and potential maintenance costs staff recommended changing it to an upright installation and at a better location.
After investigating potential new locations staff recommended the project be created between the Trinity United Church and the Huntsville Civic Center.
Councillor, Helena Renwick, indicated that the previous location they agreed upon “may not be the best” given the anticipated ongoing maintenance costs, compared to the new one being a more cost-effective type of installation.
She said the new location would also be a pathway near the church, adding that it may also reduce the risk of vandalism being upright rather than on the ground, in addition.
Councillor, Rick Morrison, said they considered trying to keep the cost down with the initial design at the original location by using inferior paint and installation methods, however “people didn’t want to drive on it.”
He added that the new location being a path rather than a circle will also be a more inclusive space allowing for additional uses, such as honouring past loved ones.
Morrison continued that using metal will also be more durable, easier to clean, maintain, and is cheaper than what was previously planned.
He said that safety is another benefit for the new location. For instance, taking selfies is safer on the path near the Town Hall versus on the road.
In the February meeting Councillors emphasized that the project, including ongoing maintenance and repair costs, will be funded through community donations only, and won’t impact taxpayers.
Staff will continue to work with Trinity United Church on details involving the installation.
