Lake of Bays Mayor challenged area municipalities to donate to the upcoming Pow Wow in Bracebridge, in the June 4, 2024, Council meeting.

He advised Council members about the Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table (MAILT) meeting he attended last Thursday, where he learned about the financial challenges of the See Muskoka Through Our Eyes Traditional Pow Wow.

Glover said that financially “it was looking really brim but it’s really picked up.” However, although it’s in “good shape” now, he said he was advised that they are still short $15,000.

He expressed appreciation for the history behind the merging communities. “It’s been hundreds of years since our First Nations communities have met on the Muskoka River.”

The Pow Wow will also take place on the Muskoka River, which is at Annie Williams Park in Bracebridge, on June 29th and 30th.

Glover added, “This is the first Pow Wow anyone’s heard of that’s not on a reservation. So, it’s a big deal.”

Upon communicating with the Township’s CAO, Glover decided to approach Council to help with a donation. He recommended that they approve $1000 from their Sponsorship Fund to go to the Pow Wow, with the hopes that the Township will be recognized for their efforts in return.

He challenged area municipalities to step up and help too. He said, “I also want to challenge the other Towns and Townships in the District of Muskoka to donating as well.”
