Broadband Fund Has Plenty Of Interest
Local internet providers such as Lakeland Networks and XplorNet are eager to apply for the $1.75 billion Broadband Fund announced by the federal government in December.
Should they be successful, the grant would allow them to expand their reach and grow their services.
During the Jan. 19 Gravenhurst Council meeting, Parry Sound-Muskoka MP Scott Aitchison explained that this fund will help give rural communities more reliable and accessible internet.
Aitchison says his office has been coordinating with local internet providers to ensure “bigger players” don’t swoop in to take over and not fully provide internet service to those who need it most.
Mayor Paul Kelly said that students who are accessing school online – and professionals working from home in the rural areas of Gravenhurst – are hit the hardest and will benefit from improved internet service.
