Delicious meal delights reviewer at Algonquin Cafe
The chefs at Huntsville's own Algonquin Cafe & Deli are always eager to share their passion for delicious home-cooked and affordable food.
Conveniently located just off Highway 11 in Huntsville's west end, Algonquin Cafe is the go-to place for large portions, bold flavours and a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. In the summer months we are even blessed to have a second location downtown near the Muskoka River.
Recently I was encouraged to try their fish and chips; admittedly not the first thing I would think of ordering at the cafe. I have previously enjoyed their maple brisket, poutine that's big enough to share, and of course their homemade baked beans. I must admit I was curious to try one of their newer offerings.
I was not disappointed.
Hungry customers are given the option of ordering a single piece of haddock, cod, or halibut hand-dredged in a blend of flour and then dipped in the cafe's very own house-made beer batter featuring local craft beer from Canvas Brewery.
The fish is served alongside a very generous portion of their fresh cut fries, and homemade Kansas City coleslaw. I ordered the haddock, and the price tag of $9.45 for this meal was exceptionally fair given the size of the piece of fish included. Guests have the option of ordering more pieces of fish at an additional cost.
The fish was crispy on the outside and nice and flaky on the inside, not greasy or soggy which has been my unfortunate experience at other restaurants.
The fries were cooked to perfection, firm enough to hold their shape but not too crispy: they've got it down to a science.
Naturally, when it comes to fish and chips, having a side of coleslaw is practically law. The Algonquin’s Kansas City style slaw was freshly made, mild in flavour and added a nice compliment to the meal.
A bonus was their in-house tarter sauce, a condiment of which I've never been a fan . . . until now.
The creamy texture and light flavor blended nicely with the fish and I found myself dipping my fries in it so as not to waste. Kudos, Algonquin Cafe, you've changed my mind.
The cafe is open for curbside service, pickup, delivery and catering for your event. Their slogan "Where Friends Meet Friends" is more than appropriate: when it comes to fine taste and excellent quality, these are the friends you want in charge of your food.
The Algonquin Cafe is open: Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
