A new proposal aimed at increasing affordable housing in Muskoka is gaining attention. District Chair Jeff Lehman is pushing for a head lease program, a strategy that could make housing projects less risky for developers.
Under the plan, the district would lease properties from landlords and then sublease them to tenants, ensuring rent is paid and making it easier for new housing to be built.
Local housing advocates say they’re watching closely, with hopes the program will help those struggling to find a home. A report on the proposal could be presented as early as May.
