First human case of West Nile Virus in Muskoka confirmed

Posted: 2024-09-12 13:35:35 By: thebay

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has confirmed Muskoka's first human case of West Nile virus this year. The virus, transmitted from birds to mosquitoes and then to humans, has been detected in local mosquitoes, including those in Alliston and Barrie.

While many infected individuals don’t show symptoms, West Nile virus can cause serious illness, including fever and neurological issues.

The health unit advises that to protect yourself, use approved mosquito repellents, wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, and stay indoors during peak mosquito activity, typically at dusk and dawn.

Details about the individual involved, remain confidential.
