Health Unit recommends residents spring into spring with more daily physical activity

As spring begins, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is urging the public to embrace physical activity for a healthier lifestyle. Simple steps like checking spring gear and ensuring bicycles and helmets are in good condition can kickstart the season.

The health unit says Canadians make 2,000 short car trips annually, often under three kilometers. Many of these trips can be replaced with walking or cycling, promoting not only personal health but also community well-being by reducing traffic congestion and pollution.

Regular physical activity enhances quality of life and lowers the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.

Despite its benefits, the health unit says only 28% of children and 49% of adults in Canada meet the recommended activity levels.

Children aged 5 to 17 need at least 60 minutes of daily moderate to vigorous activity, while adults should aim for 150 minutes weekly.
