Huntsville Council amends the Control and Licencing of Dogs By-law

Huntsville Council passed an amendment for the Control and Licencing of Dogs By-law in the April 22, 2024, meeting.

The By-law was originally established in January 2021; however, the Town now deems it necessary to change it in lieu of the different roles of dogs based on personal and professional needs of the owners.

According to the staff report, the Town determined that it’s important to act immediately “to enact a By-law to amend the definition of Service Animals in the Control and Licencing of Dogs to include certified Trauma Support Dogs.”

The Town has changed the definition of the By-law for improved clarity, as follows:

“Service Animal shall mean an animal readily identifiable by a harness or vest being used by a person for reasons related to their disability; OR an animal being used by a Health Professional to aid in patient care; OR a trained therapeutic dog used by First Responders; and shall include a Police Dog in which a dog is trained for law enforcement for the police or other person duly appointed as a peace officer.”

The By-law will take effect immediately, as of today.
