Muskoka Lakes Fire Dept Rescues Hiker
On Monday at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Township of Muskoka Lakes Fire Department and the Muskoka Paramedics Services responded to a report of fallen hiker on the Fish Hatchery Trail off of Highway 141, in Muskoka Lakes.
A man and woman were snowshoeing on the trail, however, because of the extreme icy conditions, she lost her grip and slid down the hilly trail towards the rushing water below. Fortunately, there was a small landing at the bottom of this hill, that stopped her.
With the use of the Rescue Snowmobile and its sled, the fire crew was only able to gain partial access to the trail with approximately ¾ of the trek had to be made on foot. The hikers were soon located and the woman was quickly assessed and although no life threatening injuries had been sustained, there was an injury to her lower extremity. A stokes basket was lowered approximately 20 feet to the woman.
The woman was then transported by ambulance to South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge.
