Muskoka residents fail curbside waste audit
At this week’s District of Muskoka Engineering and Public Works Committee meeting, councillors discussed the results of the 2024 curbside waste audit.
The audit revealed that more than half of what’s being put out as garbage is actually recyclable or compostable.
District staff found that 43% of waste should be in the organics collection, 7% in recycling, and 3% classified as "other." Misplaced waste was highest in Muskoka Lakes Township at 55%.
On the flip side, nearly 30% of recycling materials should have been disposed of as garbage or organics. The audit also highlighted that only 40% of eligible residents participate in green bin collection. In response, councillors emphasized the need for stricter measures, like mandatory clear garbage bags, starting next year.
