Police warn of bank investigator scams

Posted: 2025-01-31 06:57:36 By: thebay

The OPP is warning the public about a rise in fraudulent bank investigator scams, where scammers spoof OPP’s non-emergency number to make their activities seem legitimate.

Police say in these scams, victims are tricked into believing they need to help catch a dishonest bank employee or resolve suspicious transactions by providing personal information or transferring funds.

The OPP, RCMP, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) have all issued alerts about these ongoing phishing schemes. Scammers often impersonate financial institutions and use fake phone numbers, emails, or logos to appear trustworthy.

To protect yourself, never trust caller ID, verify claims directly with your bank using trusted contact details, and avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages.

Police remind you that legitimate organizations will never ask for transfers for "security" reasons or ask you to visit your home to collect your bank card.

If you suspect fraud, contact police, or the CAFC for assistance.
