Sportsplex Structural Issues Results In a $40,000 Fix
Bracebridge Town officials say they learned a painful but valuable lesson with the number of problems they've encountered at the Bracebridge Sportsplex.
On Monday, the town’s general committee agreed to shell out $40,500 to repair and refinish the wood soffits on the 12 year old building.
Beginning almost immediately after its completion, the Sportsplex faced a number of structural issues. The latest problem with the soffits is due to moisture escaping from inside the building.
Councilor Mark Quemby said he was disappointed with the number of defects with the Sportsplex’s construction.
“I’m guessing this is all on the taxpayer’s back,” he said. He questioned what could be done in the future to hold the contractors responsible, especially with a new arena and library in the planning stages.
Town CAO John Sisson assured him that lessons had been learned. He said the Town is already putting failsafes into place with projects like the recently completely Fire Hall on Taylor Road.
