TLDSB files lawsuits against social media firms
Trillium Lakelands District Schoolboard and 4 other Ontario school boards have united in lawsuits against Snapchat, TikTok, and Meta, alleging harm to students' well-being and academic progress.
The initial joint lawsuit of $4.5 billion was announced by four major school boards. Recently, five more boards including TLDSB, along with two private schools, filed lawsuits totaling nearly $2.6 billion.
The claims aim to address concerns that social media platforms are negatively impacting children's cognition, behavior, and learning.
Data from 2021 shows that a significant majority of Ontario students regularly use social media, with a substantial portion spending five or more hours daily on these platforms.
