Waste Disposal Continues To Be An Issue In The Region

The cost of removing or remediating Muskoka’s unmanned waste disposal sites was up for discussion during the latest District council meeting.

Muskoka has 88 unmanned bin sites spread across the region, but last year the province said they all need to be removed or remediated by 2023. A number of sites must be dealt with immediately and are scheduled for removal.

How best to deal with all of the sites is currently up for debate. During the latest District meeting, Coun. Steve Clement questioned what it would mean to their existing garbage collection contract if the changes result in new waste collection routes.

Stephanie Mack, the District’s director of waste management and environmental services, said there was some flexibility in the contract with the provider Waste Connections of Canada. If the decision was to make new waste collection routes, Mack said they would then negotiate the difference in cost with Waste Connections.
