Carney expected to call an election on Sunday
Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit Rideau Hall this Sunday to ask Governor General Mary Simon to dissolve Parliament, triggering a general election. The move comes just a week after Carney was sworn in and appointed his cabinet.
The campaign is expected to last between 36 and 50 days, with election day likely falling on either April 28 or May 5.
Recent polling shows a close race, with Carney’s Liberals holding 37.7% support, just ahead of Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives at 37.4%.
However, due to the geographic distribution of their voter base, projections suggest the Liberals could secure 176 seats compared to 133 for the Conservatives – enough to secure a majority government.
As the campaign unfolds, party leaders will work to solidify support across key battlegrounds, with Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia expected to play decisive roles in determining the outcome.
