Gravenhurst Mayor comments on Hospital funding

Posted: 2024-07-08 07:30:33 By: thebay

The Mayor of Gravenhurst weighed in on the hospital redevelopment controversy last week saying that the municipality supports Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare and local health services. In 2023, the town allocated $1 million to a reserve for healthcare improvements, including potential contributions to two new hospital sites in Muskoka.

Mayor Heidi Lorenz says their commitment to the new hospital sites is contingent upon several conditions including:

  • Funds are needed at the time of construction.
  • A suitable site for Gravenhurst residents is prioritized in site selection.
  • Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare provides urgent-care clinic services and walk-in clinic support in Gravenhurst, and
  • Financial commitment is not finalized until construction begins, estimated in 10-14 years.

Recently, Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare's board approved moving forward with hospital redevelopment plans, initiating detailed planning for sites in Bracebridge and Huntsville.

Lorenz says the town continues to engage with municipal partners, physicians, and Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare to prioritize community healthcare needs.
