Muskoka Hospice in crisis

“Muskoka Hospice is in a crisis and need money for beds,”  Councillor Steven Clement said in his Health and Safety update, in the June 8, 2022 Bracebridge Council meeting.

The Hospice was recently denied Provincial funding for the use of 5 beds that it has available for service to residents of the community, for palliative and respite care.

A temporary solution was provided on May 20th, when the Ministry of Health and Long-term care approved the purchase of the beds by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare for patients in need of palliative care. This will provide a short-term relief to the Hospice facility with the hospital paying the same rate for the beds that the Ministry would have.

Councillor Don Smith inquired about the duration of the funding, asking “Is this ongoing funding?”

Councillor Clement indicated, “It’s a six-month contract,” and added that a new proposal in writing will have to be issued for further assistance. The Executive Director, Donna Kearney will conduct a presentation in the future for further support.
