OPP celebrate 50 years of women in uniform
The Ontario Provincial Police celebrated a milestone—50 years of women in uniform, last week at its General Headquarters, honoring the anniversary with a new mural.
It was on May 27, 1974, that 15 women began training at the OPP Academy, making history as the first female recruits. By the end of that year, 39 women had joined the force.
Since then, nearly 2,500 women have served in the OPP. Deputy Commissioner Kari Dart emphasized that recognizing the trailblazers helps remove barriers and inspires future generations, while retired Inspector Irena Lawrenson highlighted the progress made and the need for more women in policing.
