Bracebridge awards $85,070 contract for Sportsplex entrance upgrades

Bracebridge agreed to award a contract for the Sportsplex entrance upgrades to Muskoka Landscaping, in the April 2, 2024, meeting.

The contract was awarded to Muskoka Landscapers.

Upgrades will include evergreen shrubs and planting beds, concrete blocks with integrated cedar planked benches, bike storage, and signs.

The agenda indicates the Town agreed to the cost as “the proposed price of $85,070.16, plus HST, less an in-kind contribution equal to $38,000.”

The Town is authorized to enter into the agreement that is to be to the satisfaction of the Director of Recreation, Cindy O’Regan, and the Director of Finance/Treasurer, Paul Judson.

Councillor, Don Smith, expressed enthusiasm with the changes to the entrance, suggesting that it’s “much better,” and is a positive change to the community.

Councillor, Archie Buie, inquired about whether the Town’s Access Committee will be involved with the installation of the benches, so they have a chance to provide their input.

Manager of Facilities, Will Crowe, advised that they won’t be consulting with the Access Committee given time constraints because they wanted to get the job done as soon as possible.

Buie suggested they consult with the Committee in the future “so they can at least comment.”

General Committee members discussed the area being a popular spot for kids playing, especially in the summer months, and about whether there would be consideration to differentiating it from a parking lot and adding a potential barrier to prevent them from climbing the trees.

Crowe indicated that the goal was to make the area look welcoming and attractive to kids, and that effort can go into “informing and educating instead of just putting up walls and barriers.”
