District declares State of Emergency

Posted: 2025-03-30 18:23:38 By: thebay

The District of Muskoka has declared a state of emergency following the severe ice storm that hit the region from March 28 to 30. The storm caused widespread power outages, downed trees and hydro lines, and hazardous road conditions.

The declaration, made Sunday afternoon, allows the District to access additional resources and coordinate response efforts with local municipalities. Southern Muskoka has been hit the hardest, and officials are urging residents to stay home and off the roads. Many roads are blocked or reduced to a single lane, with trees and power lines continuing to fall. Emergency response times may be delayed due to dangerous conditions.

Residents are reminded to stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines, use flashlights instead of candles, and never use propane heaters or generators indoors due to carbon monoxide risks. Unplug electric vehicles to prevent surges, and keep sump pumps and drains clear to reduce flooding.

Deputy District Chair Terry Glover is encouraging residents to check on neighbors, particularly seniors and those who may need extra help. The District continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates online and through social media.
