Smith announces $64 million to improve wildland firefighting capabilities
The Ontario and Canadian governments are investing $64 million to enhance the province’s wildland fire program. MPP Graydon Smith, the Minister of Natural Resources, announced that this funding will bolster firefighting capabilities by hiring and training personnel and acquiring new equipment, including fuel systems and tankers.
Smith says the government is making critical investments in their wildland fire program to keep Ontario at the forefront of firefighting. He emphasized the importance of preparing for increasingly complex fire seasons to protect communities.
The initiative also includes contracting four additional medium helicopters, creating over 100 permanent positions to build expertise, and investing $5 million to attract and retain firefighting staff.
Smith expressed pride in Ontario's skilled wildland firefighters, highlighting their vital role in community safety.
