Eastern Wolf spotted in Lake of Bays
Lake of Bays says they are receiving reports of wolf or coyote sightings in the Finlayson ward, prompting concerns among some residents.
The township says this species is protected under the Endangered Species Act and aAs it’s difficult to distinguish an Eastern Wolf from other species, the province has prohibited hunting and trapping of both wolves and coyotes. The Algonquin-area Wolf, or Eastern Wolf, inhabits regions including Finlayson, Franklin, and Sinclair wards.
The Government of Ontario recommends:
- Keeping dogs inside at night.
- Clean up after your dog — coyotes are attracted to dog feces.
- Spay and neuter your dogs - coyotes are attracted to, and can mate with, domestic dogs.
- Keep pet food indoors.
- Do not let your dogs roam from your property.
