Lake of Bays approves SS Bigwin overnight mooring in Dwight

Lake of Bays Council approved S. S. Bigwin overnight mooring in Dwight, in the July 9, 2024, meeting.

According to a report by Licencing Coordinator, Anne Tapley, the Township’s By-law permits ‘day use’ only, not allowing overnight mooring between 11pm and 5am.

However, the report adds that the exemption is in line with the Township’s Economic Development Strategy. It indicates, “Offering the additional location would encourage movement around the tourism network across various hamlets. As a result, this has the potential to draw increased visitors and create a positive economic impact for businesses in Dwight.”

The Bigwin has been approved since 2018 for boat cruises during the Dwight beach farmer’s market, with no violations or complaints to date.

Overnight mooring will start at 1pm on Wednesdays until 3:30pm Thursdays, from July 10th to August 29, 2024, for a total of 16 nights, at the Dwight public dock.

Mayor, Terry Glover, indicated that he was with the understanding that it wasn’t affordable for the boat to go to Dwight.

CAO, Bryan Brown, agreed that this was his understanding as well until he sat down with the Bigwin General Manager who confirmed that it wasn’t true.

The commercial use agreement on municipal property will be applicable for the 2024 season.
