OPP remind drivers of new accident reporting rules for 2025

Posted: 2025-01-28 07:18:09 By: thebay

As of January 1st, Ontario has updated its collision reporting rules. The most significant change is the increase in the damage threshold for reporting accidents to police. Previously, collisions over $2,000 in damage required a report; now the threshold is $5,000.

The change aims to reduce administrative strain on both drivers and law enforcement, considering rising repair costs.

Police say you must report accidents to police if damage exceeds $5,000, if there are injuries, if public property is damaged, or if criminal activity is suspected.

Even with damage below this amount, always exchange personal and insurance details with other parties involved. For non-severe collisions, you have 24 hours to report to a Collision Reporting Centre.
