Bracebridge Council expressed they were not consulted about the closing of their hospital's obstetrics department, in the March 12, 2025, meeting.

A public announcement by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MACH) indicated that they put a temporary closure, lasting 12 months, on the department and have relocated labour and delivery services from South Muskoka Memorial Hospital in Bracebridge to Huntsville District Memorial Hospital (HDMH), effective March 11th.

They stated their decision was based on ensuring “high-quality obstetrical services.”

They added, “This decision addresses urgent challenges and will be reassessed at six and nine months, with a goal to restore services at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (SMMH) as soon as possible.”

They also expressed confidence in their ability to provide “low-risk obstetrical services that are patient centred at our level 1 hospital site in Huntsville.”

Councillor, Debbie Vernon, expressed dismay about the department closure and that Council was not notified or given the opportunity to discuss the matter.

She said she learned about it from the news, adding, “council had no notice to make a decision about it.”

She expressed concern about residents having to go to the Huntsville hospital for obstetrical services because “they need specialized drivers to transport them there.”

She also disagreed with the decision to close the department, indicating, “having an OB department is vital in our community.”

She requested that the department be reinstated, and that Council have the opportunity to review the situation.

Mayor, Rick Maloney, said he has been communicating with the Board’s Chair, the MPP, “and will continue to work with MACH and partners” to encourage ongoing discussions and to garner support so they can hopefully reopen the department.
