Bracebridge Council agreed to waive the rental fees for a community powwow at the Annie Williams Park, in the April 10, 2024, meeting.

Staff received the request from the Collective Powwow Committee on February 12, 2024, for the See Through Our Eyes powwow that will take place from June 29 and 30th.

The letter said, “This would be tremendously helpful in getting this event up and running and help us in this process of starting our journey together, in a good way, toward Truth and Reconciliation.”

The Powwow is an Indigenous event that was also funded by the District of Muskoka, through the Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table (MAILT) in the March meeting.

According to a District report by Program Manager for Continuous Improvement, Tina Kilbourne, MAILT was established “with a mandate to strengthen Indigenous-Municipality relations in Muskoka and address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action.”

$10,000 in funding was approved by the District to go to the Bracebridge Chamber of Commerce for the See Through Our Eyes initiative.

According to the staff report, the powwow is an event that brings the community together, with celebrations that include Indigenous Day, Summer Solstice, and Canada Day.

The event will include demonstrations, workshops, live entertainment, speakers, and artists.

The goal of the initiative is to establish positive relationships between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous groups. The whole community is welcome to join these events.
