Family lucky to be safe after fire, despite a non working smoke alarm

Last night, Huntsville/Lake of Bays firefighters responded to a home on Domtar Road following reports of an electrical panel emitting sparks and smoke.

Crews from Stations One and Five contained the fire to the panel, preventing further damage to the residence. Thankfully, two adults, two children, and their dog safely evacuated the home upon discovering smoke, without any injuries reported.

Damage estimates are under $10,000, but it was noted the home had working smoke alarms on some floors, but not where the fire started.  The Fire Department reminds residents that only working smoke alarms will protect you and your family in the event of a fire. Smoke alarms that are expired or have their batteries removed will not keep you safe. If a fire occurs in your home or workplace, get out and stay out. Call 911 from a safe place outside of the building. If you have concerns or questions about your smoke alarms contact Steve Markham at 705 789 5201 extension 3609.
