District commits to reducing road salt to protect lakes
The District of Muskoka says it is committing to reducing road salt use while maintaining road safety.
At its latest meeting, Council passed a resolution urging the province to take action, including funding an expert advisory committee on salt pollution.
District Chair Jeff Lehman says the District “looks forward to continuing to improve lake health and provide leadership in reducing the environmental impact of road salt in Muskoka.”
Council is also pushing for new training standards and liability protections for private contractors.
Environmental groups warn that nearly 30% of Muskoka’s lakes are seeing rising salt levels, threatening aquatic life.
