Food insecurity nearly doubles in Simcoe Muskoka
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports that residents in the region are struggling to afford nutritious foods, according to a new survey.
The Nutritious Food Basket survey reveals that basic nutritious foods cost $1,302.77 a month for a family of four, and $452.83 for a single person.
Officials say families receiving Ontario Works benefits would have to spend all of their income on food and rent alone.
The survey also highlights a rise in food insecurity, with one in three households affected—nearly double since 2022.
