Huntsville Council approved $7,000 for a new video surveillance system at River Mill Park, in the October 28, 2024, meeting.

According to the staff report, the Town had $70,000 allocated in the Information Technology Capital Budget to replace the current general video surveillance system, however, the additional $7,000 is specifically for video surveillance at River Mill Park.

The report indicates that $5,900 of the cost will go to video installation, plus $1000 for signage.

It adds that the Town has been experiencing an increase in vandalism at the park over the past few years and have received ongoing public complaints about it.

Especially concerning are areas near the bandshell and washroom areas, and staff recommended installing video surveillance cameras to help manage it.

The report indicates, “This senseless and costly vandalism continues in River Mill Park today which places additional strains on the Town’s budget and resources.”

In the August 9th meeting Council also expressed interest in ensuring there is also adequate lighting at the park.

Councillor, Jason FitGerald, also suggested that staff consider increasing the lighting in the area so that the people caught on camera can be identified more easily.

Mayor, Nancy Alcock, indicated that they recently had to install new lighting at the Summit Centre for the same reason, drawing attention to dark areas.

Staff have been directed to hire a consultant to conduct an assessment on the lighting required at the park.
